Sawtooth Mountains

You know those days when nothing seems to go right? Well…this was one of those days.

We woke up in beautiful Ketchum and had a yummy breakfast and then loaded up and hit the road again.

Driving through the Sawtooth Mountains was gorgeous. The mountain range is so jagged and interesting to look at.

Heart Lake Trail

We had planned to do Heart Lake Trail. To get to the trailhead we were supposed to go up this canyon for about 9 miles {but it took us more like 35 minutes because of the gravel road}.

The canyon had definitely experienced a wildfire recently. But even in that environment there was something beautiful about it. We hit the part where we should have been to the trailhead and we didn’t see anything.

We continued up the road only to find nothing. We were worried to turn around because we just KNEW that as soon as we did it would just be a little further up the road and we would miss it. Finally we hit a different trailhead and pulled in to look at the map.

Once we examined the map, there did not appear to be any trailhead to Heart Lake. We found the lake – but no trail to it! We were pretty bummed out about it and all of the other trails looks to long or strenuous for our little group.

Mark and the big kids went exploring while I stayed and fed Lydia and made lunch.

She is seriously the most precious little thing

When they got back someone had had an accident so we had to take care of that and we decided our best option was to just head back down the canyon.

When we were driving back we looked closer and did find a heart carved into a tree {the trailhead?} around the area where the trail should have started. It was in the low 40s and windy and we ultimately just decided to keep heading down because the temperature was continuing to drop.

The day was TOO much for some little people – this picture kills me!

It was beautiful to drive through this area but it’s always a bit of a bummer when things don’t pan out.

McCall

Next we made our way up to McCall. This is another BEAUTIFUL part of Idaho. Oh my. However, it was still cold and rainy when we got there and so our hopes of doing some hiking in Ponderosa State Park didn’t happen.

THEN we had heard great reviews of My Father’s Place and Ice Cream Alley and had planned to go there for dinner and a treat. Only to find that My Father’s Place is closed on Wednesdays {WHAT?!} and Ice Cream Alley was only open on the weekends now. Such a bummer.

We tried several other places only to find early close times and it was just weird. Finally we ate at Growler’s Pizza and stopped at Albertson’s to get the kids some ice cream.

Silver Lining

Luckily, ONE thing did work out for us, and that was where we were staying for the night. It was a great AirBNB and we were so glad to have a nice, cozy place to stay for the night!

So the day definitely didn’t go as planned but that’s just how the cookie crumbles sometimes and we went with it and still had a great time. Here’s to rolling with things! And tomorrow is a new day!
