{RECAP} November 2019 Schoolhouse

Another month has completely flown by! We deviated from our schedule a little bit this month and I have no regrets about it! We took a week off to do some projects around the house and it was nice for all of us to recharge a little bit.

First up – JACOB!

Language Arts

This month Jacob finished another sight word list and another spelling chart.

In his coursebook we covered prepositions and then have spent the ENTIRE MONTH working on a project!

We have been studying the geography of North America and I asked Jacob to pick a country in North America, research it, and then he will give an oral report on it. Jacob picked the United States and has been working on hard on his poster that he is making. He has loved it and it has been fun to just let him go for it!

Handwriting

Jacob continues to work on his handwriting. He does a really nice job.

Read Aloud

This month we finished Henry’s Red Sea by Barbara Smucker. It was so sweet and was a really great way to start talking about hard topics {like war and the refugees that come from that} in a very age appropriate way.

We are now just about done reading Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The book is silly and full of nonsense – it’s a classic!

Math

We are still working on his unit about measurements. This month we learned about making nine, hemispheres, taking away and finding the difference, missing addends, reviewed money, adding on to nine, counting by fives using nickels, and learned measurement in inches and feet.

History

We finished our first unit in history this month and we loved it! I wrote all about it here. To wrap it up, we learned about ancient India and did some review of ancient Greece and ancient China.

We began our second unit and have learned all about the VIKINGS! It has been fascinating.

As we began our new unit, we started a new book. We are reading Beorn the Proud by Madeleine Polland. It has been really interesting and drew us in immediately.

Science

We also finished up our first unit in science – kingdoms and classification! I wrote all about it here. We wrapped up our unit this month with learning about the animalia kingdom.

Our second science unit is about maturation and sexual reproduction. I was really nervous about this unit and have lots of thoughts about it. I will make sure to share all about it when we finish – but it is going really well.

This month we have covered male bodies and puberty, female bodies and puberty and menstruation.

We studied Ephesians 6 and wrote about the traits of a “Strong Man” and Proverbs 31 and wrote about the traits of a “Virtuous Woman”.

Typing

Jacob continues to really enjoy typing. This program is simple but really effective. He and I both love it!

Music

We are continuing our study of Baroque Era music. As we finished our study of The Prince of Denmark’s March, we discussed the trumpet in Baroque music. Mark showed the kids his trumpet and played a little bit for us and let the kids try it out. It was so fun!

Next, we have been studying some work by Antonio Vivaldi. We have studied “Spring” (Allegro), from The Four Seasons and Gloria in excelsis Deo.

We learned about the poems that accompanied the music for The Four Seasons and discussed the differences between sacred and secular music.

Piano continues to go well and I felt like we are definitely making some progress!

Civics

We continued learning about the pilgrims and studied about Thanksgiving Day.

We then switched gears a little bit and began our study of Colonial America and have been learning about what life was like during colonial times.

Nature

This month we learned about FUNGUS. It was fun to learn a little bit more about it since we had talked about it in October with our study in science.

The kids drew a mushroom and labeled the different parts.

Now, SARAH!

Peaceful Preschool – Letters F and G

You know how I have mentioned how much my little Sarah loves learning. Well, this month we decided we were going to accelerate things a little bit. I think this will be great for many different reasons. She can’t wait!

For her Letter F unit we read: Fish Out of Water by Helen Palmer and Ten Little Fish by Audrey Wood and Bruce Wood. Sarah made a fish bowl, made a glitter glue F, studied some famous paintings from the sea and made one of her own watercolor masterpieces, put fish stickers on her F alphabet page, and made a fish painting with celery!

For her Letter G study we read: Go, Dog Go by P.D. Eastman, Good Night, Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann, and Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown.

Sarah made a glitter glue G, painted a green G for her G alphabet page, made some porridge AND puppy chow!

TGTB Language Arts Pre-K

Sarah is doing so well in her preschool program. She is now a fourth of the way done and knows her letters and sounds so well for the letters we have covered.

She got to do some games this month and she really loved feeding the elephant!

Handwriting

Sarah continues to do well with handwriting. She sometimes has a hard time forming the letters the correct way, and she still prefers making all of her letters capitalized when she is just writing for fun, but this is good practice and we are going with it!

Come, Follow Me

I can’t believe we are almost done with our study of the New Testament. This year has been incredible.

This month we studied Hebrews, James, and 1 and 2 Peter. We focused our attention on believing in Jesus Christ, what faith is, controlling the things we say, and the gospel being preached in the Spirit World.

Wrap Up

It’s been yet another wonderful month of learning and growing together. I am grateful for the time we get to spend together as a family learning. We are looking forward to “Christmas School” next month!
