Long Weekend in Chicago: Part 1 Willis Tower, Millennium Park & Deep Dish Pizza

Mark and I hardly EVER get away just the two of us.  We love our kiddos and love traveling as a family but there is something special about just exploring the two of us too.  We usually jam a million things into our trip {there is NEVER enough time!} but we love it.

Last April we had the opportunity to go to Chicago for a long weekend and it was AMAZING!  We were going for an extra-special reason but we will get to that later.  This was both Mark and I’s first time in the windy city and it was awesome.

We flew into Chicago, took the train into the city, and left our luggage at our hotel and headed over to the Willis Tower.

CHICAGO CITYPASS

One thing that Mark and I bought for our whirlwind Chicago trip was the Chicago CityPass.  This was our first time using this and I definitely think it was worth it for this trip.

It includes admission to five of Chicago’s top attractions and even has some perks too.  When we arrived at the Willis Tower the line was CRAZY.  The wait was anticipated to be at least an hour and a half but with our pass we were able to go right to the front and maybe waited ten minutes at the top.  TOTALLY WORTH IT!

WILLIS TOWER

The view was incredible and even though it was a cold day, it was very clear and you could see a lot.

Now, let me just put this out there right now, I am NOT a fan of heights.  They really freak me out.  So this was an excursion done out of love.  I just focused on the horizon.  This was working out great for a while.

BUT Willis Tower has created these glass encasements that hang off the edge of the tower so you feel like you are hovering {or falling to your death…whichever you prefer}.  As we were standing in line I became nauseous just thinking about it and really didn’t want to do it.  I was going to stay out of the glass box of death and just take nice supportive pictures of my hubby…that was my plan.  But they pretty much just threw me in there and I was pleasantly surprised at how cool I was about it.  I didn’t look down and definitely didn’t care to linger but I DID IT!

MILLENNIUM PARK

Afterwards, we walked over to Millennium Park to see “The Bean”.  It was actually a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be.  Definitely a quick little stop but you can’t go to Chicago without seeing “The Bean”, right?

LOU MALNATI’S

Finally, we ended our day enjoying our first taste of deep-dish pizza at Lou Malnati’s! This was really good and REALLY filling! Mark and I shared a small pizza and we still couldn’t finish it. But it was amazing and the ambiance was really fun.

Our walk back to the hotel was BITTERLY cold.  Lesson #1 from Chicago – bring more layers!
