We may well be a third of the way through our homeschool year – but here we are writing about curriculum plans! I’ve tweaked Sarah’s plan a little bit – but I’ll talk more about that later in our seasonal schoolhouse post. Here is where we started.
Overall Thoughts
Sarah is a delight to teach. She is eager to learn and has such a positive attitude. Not much is changing in regards to her subjects. Just keeping on! BUT Sarah has been begging to learn how to type. So we are going to give that a whirl!
Curriculum
- Come, Follow Me: This is a family subject. The first half of this year we studied the Old Testament and have now transitioned to the New Testament.
- Language Arts: The Good and the Beautiful Level 2 Language Arts course.
- Math: The Good and the Beautiful Math 2 course – this is Sarah’s favorite subject!
- Science: Sarah and Jacob do science together. This year The Good and the Beautiful has changed how they do their science courses. They are now designed for Grades 3-8. However, I had no doubt that Sarah could continue working through them, so she has! This year they will be doing the Good and the Beautiful science courses: Paleontology, Reptiles, Amphibians, and Fish, Motion and Simple Machines, Kingdoms and Classification, and Health and the Physical Body.
- History: Sarah is actually getting a little bit of a history break this year. I will be doing a US Constitution and Government course with Jacob that Sarah is not required to take yet. She frequently listens in but doesn’t participate. The second half of the year, we are planning on moving into the Good and the Beautiful History Year 1 for Sarah and Jacob.
- Handwriting: The Good and the Beautiful Handwriting Workbook Level 2
- Nature Notebook: Sarah began using this Nature Notebook last year, and will continue it for the next several years – The Good and the Beautiful Nature Notebook.
- Piano: Faber Piano Adventures Level 1
- Reader: Sarah is reading at a third grade reading level as she goes into second grade. Every day she reads for at least 20 minutes, but she LOVES reading and is very frequently curled up somewhere with a good book.
- Read Aloud: Click HERE for Sarah’s read aloud list for the year.
- Typing: This year Sarah really wanted to learn how to type. So she is beginning with The Good and the Beautiful Typing 1 course.
- Letter Subscriptions: Last year our family started to get some letter subscriptions. The kiddos all love them and we decided to continue with three of the four letters this year. We will be doing Letters from Afar, Writings from the Wild, and American Heritage Adventure.
- Let’s Make Art: Sarah enjoys doing watercoloring tutorials with Let’s Make Art. She doesn’t get the subscription box like Jacob does, but it is something she still enjoys doing.
- Drawing: Sarah is continuing her drawing workbook. This year she is working through The Good and the Beautiful Draw Vintage Images Level 2 notebook.
- Ballet: Sarah is continuing ballet. She loves it and we love watching her!
Conclusion
Sarah is such a delight to teach. It never gets old – watching my children grow and develop into these beautiful souls. Sarah is a joy and I would be lost without her. So keep on being your beautiful self, sweet girl, and enjoy second grade!
Thanks for the curriculum review. You (teacher) and the children (students) are awesome.
