White Mountain Petroglyphs

We went on an ADVENTURE! To add to our celebration of Mark’s birthday, we decided to go exploring as a family. Mark picked to go explore the White Mountain Petroglyphs.

I didn’t know anything about these and so it was fun to all put on our adventure pants and explore something new!

Even though the petroglyphs are close “geographically” to Rock Springs, they take longer than you think because the majority of your drive is on a dirt road. It was really peaceful though and we love our space!

We went in the morning to beat the heat and it was pretty perfect. It is a short 1/4 mile hike to the petroglyphs and the kids had a blast running free and easy. Even little Lydie seemed to be enjoying herself at first.

I couldn’t believe HOW MANY petrographys there were! Granted, others have come in and “added” to them {grrr…}, but what is there is amazing.

History

So here is the history on the petroglyphs – you know how I like my history 😉 The location has importance to four different Native American tribes. And there are HUNDREDS of carved figures on the 300-foot tall cliff face. These were etched between 1,000 to 200 years ago. There are several bison and elk as well as other forms and footprints. There are also handprints scooped into the rock – AMAZING…and also HOW?!

This site is sacred to these tribes and some even believe it was the birthing place for the Plains and Great Basin tribes.

Our Time

Our time there was fun and relaxing. The kids loved exploring and wondering what was in all of the little “caves”. Lydie became less happy as time wore on and so I mostly stayed in the shade and swayed her to sleep.

But this was a great, simple, off-the-beaten path activity that we thoroughly enjoyed!

Now…more adventures!
