San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

Our first full day of FUN was PACKED in Texas!  The only downer was that it was quite a bit colder than we were anticipating.  It is chilly!  But that doesn’t stop us from having a great time!

Our first stop in San Antonio was to the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.  There are actually FOUR missions included and each one was so different and interesting.  I had done a lot of research before our trip and found that most people said The Alamo was interesting and definitely worth seeing but to plan the bulk of your time at the other missions.  So that is what we did and we have no regrets!

The first was Mission Concepcion.  This one was beautiful and just MAYBE my favorite.  It is the oldest unrestored church in America.  We all loved exploring, especially Jacob.  We decided it would be the best place to play hide and seek.

Next up was Mission San Jose, also known as the “Queen of the Missions” and was fully restored in the 1930s.  This was definitely the biggest and we spent the most time here.  This is also where the visitor center is for all of the missions.  Mission San Jose was also particularly interesting because it really gave you the feel of what it would have looked like to be inside of one of these missions back in its day.

We then hopped over to Mission San Juan.  This one felt really different than the previous two.  It was much smaller and the church was white.  They had started another church but abandoned it because the population was declining within the mission.

The last one was Mission Espada.  The highlight was probably the lesson the kiddos got about how to make thread.  It was so much fun to watch them so enthralled.

After exploring the missions {which we thought were definitely worth exploring!} we headed over to THE ALAMO!
