Typing is an interesting subject. I say interesting in that I feel weird even calling it a subject. But it IS an important – and essential – skill to have these days. This was Jacob’s second year doing the typing curriculum from The Good and the Beautiful and it went beautifully.
What is taught in Typing 2?
Typing 1 covers proper posture and hand position, home row placement, all of the letters, the space bar, the semicolon, the period, the shift key, an typing words and short sentences.
Typing 2 reviews posture, hand position, home position, shift key, and the period. Typing 2 introduced how to make things bold, a comma, increasing the font size, question mark, apostrophe, exclamation mark, quotation mark, numbers 0-9, hyphen key, and caps lock.
Supplies
When you order Typing 2 you receive a course book and a sticker sheet {inside the course book}. You get to add a sticker each time you complete a page. Your child will need access to a computer or laptop that has a word processing program {we use Microsoft Word}. We also use a document holder to hold up the course book. This is definitely not essential but it does make things convenient. PLUS, you may be surprised at how many uses you will find for it!
When should I start?
Jacob started Typing 1 when he was seven years old {second grade year}. This is the earliest I would start and we really only started because Jacob was asking for it. I would say I would begin anywhere between ages 7-9 and start with Typing 1. For reference, he was eight years old while he completed Typing 2.
How is it set up?
This course is ULTRA SIMPLE. There are 69 lessons in this course and probably take 10-20 minutes depending on the lesson and kiddo. All you have to do is open your word processing program, open your book to your lesson, and GO.
I felt like there was a good amount of review at the beginning of things taught in Typing 1 and then the course added more and more as it progressed. There are four progress checks which are fun to see how things are, well…progressing 😉.
My Favorite Things
This course is not flashy like most typing courses. Which is actually a big PLUS for me. Jacob’s ADHD makes the flashy stuff really difficult for him. It almost always triggers some not-so-great behavior and so we tend to steer away from it when we can.
With all of that said, this course is BEAUTIFUL. I am a sucker for beautiful things and this course is that. It is filled with beautiful poetry and watercolor images.
I love that this is a child driven course. Jacob does it completely independently. The only exception is when I time him for his progress and just looking over his lesson each day.
Final Thoughts
This is a great course to teach your child how to type. I also think this is a really great supplement if your child just wants some extra practice. The poems are beautiful and inspiring and just filled with GOODNESS.
