This may be one of my favorite home improvement projects we have ever done. It’s been months and months behind the scenes and yet it came together really quickly. Pieces were gathered from birthdays, Christmases, and anniversaries and it was so fun to see it all finally come together in this space. It doesn’t even feel like the same space.
BEFORE & AFTER

I cannot tell you how much we use this room now. It has gone from a practically ignored and useless space (we only ever went in there to play the piano), to now this beautiful space that we all want to be in all the time. It has been so fun to see the kids play games on the floor, play the piano MORE, and just snuggle up and read in the chair. It is a testament to me that when a place feels inviting, it can change everything.
When I was coming up with our plan for this space I wanted it to be cozy, functional, and nostalgic and I felt like we accomplished that. I truly feel like every little bit of it came together so well. I think doing these projects is becoming my new love language and I am so grateful Mark has been so supportive of my ideas.

Some things that I particularly love…
- I love the cozy leather chair. I feel like it elevated the space so much AND it has been so comfy from the moment we got it.
- I love the color of this room. Blue is definitely our favorite color and I think it adds such a calming feeling to the room.
- I love the rug. This was such a gamble for me because I got it online and I was so worried about the color not being what I was wanting but it truly is perfect. I think it brought the whole room together (plus it actually fits the space compared to our previous old rug we were using).
- I love that we were able to get some of Mark’s things from his mission out of a box and for us to enjoy and for him to remember. It makes things unique and personal. We were also able to display some other things from Mark’s grandparents that he had and it just makes me happy to have those things out now.
- I love our new family tree. I have wanted one for a long time and it was one of my Christmas gifts this year. It makes me really happy.
- I love having a designated space for the computer. This is our first time with a desktop in a really long time and in just the last couple of weeks it has done a lot for me personally. I am much more productive with my time when I have a place to work rather than just sitting on the couch or in bed with the laptop on my lap (definitely way too comfortable which led to a lot of time wasting on my part). This has been so much better.
And as silly as this sounds, this room represents a low of growth for me. I have struggled a lot in my adulthood life to be content. I have had moments of contentment, but more often than I want to admit, I was always mentally waiting for something else. It makes me sad to think about the time I have wasted with those feelings. But I have done a lot of work to change those feelings and I can say I really am the happiest I have ever been.
This was a big mental shift for me but has been the best. It has been a wonderful journey that I am really grateful for. And the office is just a little bit of a physical piece of that. Normally, I have not wanted to invest time and money into things for our home. Not because I didn’t want to, but because I always just told myself that it wasn’t our “forever” place and so what was the point.
We know this home isn’t our forever place. But it is our home right now and I want to enjoy it for however long the Lord sees fit to have us here. So this is just an outward way of being content with where we are and it has brought me a lot of joy.
I really love your office. The color, design, furniture, desk, piano, display wall, just all of it. I can understand your hesitation in doing projects because it may not be your forever home. Read Doctrine & Covenants 51:17. It might give you a different perspective. Looking forward to seeing your next project. You have excellent taste in how you design an area.
Thank you, Grandma. And thank you for sharing that scripture. I am really trying to lean into that perspective.
