Mother’s Day

I am forever grateful for the my mother and the many mother figures in my life. I have been blessed to have the best of women around me. I hope I have learned the lessons they have tried to teach me, by word and by example.

I wish that every day I appreciated more the gift of motherhood. I have been tired lately. Well, I have been tired for a very long time. But I read something recently that has made me ponder. That motherhood is about relationships – nurturing, loving, and teaching. While homemaking is about the many things we do to make our homes a special place and “running” smoothly. I believe in the value of being a “homemaker”. It is a gift to try and create a space for relationships to love and the Spirit to reside. However, I think too often I get caught up in the “homemaking” – making sure the house is clean, people are where they need to be, that schoolwork is getting done, meals are being made, appointments and therapies are happening, etc. And sometimes, I forget about the relationships – the real work of motherhood.

So this Mother’s Day, I made a goal for myself, that at the end of the day, I reflect not so much on how many things I did (or did not do) on my to do list, but rather how I built up relationships, particularly that with my children. These years with all of my children at home are flying by so quickly, and while I know the work of motherhood is never over, I do not want to waste these precious years while they are all home with me.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the women in this world, who spread love and tenderness to all.
