Jacob’s 13th Birthday

THIRTEEN! TEENAGER! HOW?!!!

Even though I do not understand how we got here, or how time is possibly moving as quickly as it is, I absolutely loved celebrating this guy. Jacob is so easy to love and is such an amazing young man.

Jacob requested orange rolls for his birthday breakfast. Lydie had to scurry off to horse therapy and the rest of us played games and had a lazy morning while waiting for the pool to open! This has been the year of SWIM! Jacob was so excited to spend the day at the pool!

It was an absolute mad house at the pool but we had such a great time. It was so fun going down the big slides with the kids and seeing their faces as they came out. It was such a happy memory. Lydie and I left early so that she could have a nap but the bigs and Mark spent a solid five hours at the pool! They loved it!

After the pool, Jacob wanted to stay in (that has become his norm on his birthday), so he went with me to pick up some Mexican food to go – his favorite – and then we had a picnic at home. We ended the night with cards, presents, and cake. His cake for this year was a chocolate peanut butter oreo cake – yum! We surprised Jacob with a special one-on-one trip with Mark to Disneyland and I think he is still in shock. Can’t wait for that!

This birthday seemed so happy to me. In so many ways, Jacob is the child I worry the least about. I just feel like he is going to be okay. His needs are simple and he is so easy to please.

One quality in Jacob that I don’t think if I’ve ever seen before this year is that of a leader. I am so grateful for an inspired Bishopric who sees Jacob. Jacob was called earlier this year to serve as the president in his Deacon’s Quorum. And it has been amazing to see Jacob lean into that role. There are so many ways to lead and he does it quietly and really beautifully. It has been a blessing to see him in this new way.

Jacob has always been very goal oriented. He is self motivated and wants to be the best he can be. I love seeing what drives him.

Jacob is also very humble. His sincerity when he apoligizes for something is so tender and it is amazing to see the kind of man the Lord is molding him into.

Jacob is also a very gentle soul and always has been. He still loves his stuffed animals and makes clothes for them.

But what is probably most surprising and such a tender mercy about Jacob is he is not afraid to be himself. He is okay with who he is and doesn’t change to match others. It is such a rare and wonderful quality – especially in a thirteen year old. I love that he is confident with who he is and what he has to give this world.

We love you so much, Jacob. Keep being the wonderful you that you are.

Happy Birthday!
