Organizing our read alouds is one of my FAVORITE activities for homeschool prep! I am still in a bit of denial that it is time to start preparing for next school year – but so excited for all of these books that Sarah and I get to dive into!
I know a lot of families do one read aloud as a family – and we may eventually do that – but I also love just having this one-on-one- time to snuggle and just ENJOY a good book together. It’s one of my favorite times of the whole school day.
My FAVORITE resource for literature is the FREE book list from The Good and the Beautiful. These books are all incredible. There are hundreds of books on there that are exactly what they name implies – good and beautiful. It is an amazing resource and I highly recommend it for read alouds and individual reading. It is even where I get most of MY books to read in my spare time now. You can find the list HERE.
Here is our line up for first grade:
- Happy Little Family by Rebecca Caudill
- Gold Mountain by Gwendolen Lampshire Hayden & Pearl Clements Gischler
- Over the Hills to Nugget by Aileen Fisher
- Abigail Adams by Jean Brown Wagoner
- The Courage of Sarah Noble by Alice Dalgliesh
- Primrose Day by Carolyn Haywood
- In Grandma’s Attic by Arleta Richardson
- The Canada Geese Quilt by Natalie Kinsey-Warnock
- Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner
- A Tree for Peter by Kate Seredy
- The King’s Equal by Katherine Paterson
- Martha Washington by Jean Brown Wagoner
- Toby Has a Dog and Other Books by May Justus

I exciting to see Sarah with her two front teeth! That is a great list of book to read.
Love. Grandma
It’s been a LONG time since she’s had those teeth! 😁
We love them, too!
